It has been reported by Football Insider that Leeds United are setting their sights on young Liverpool forward Harry Wilson.
What’s the word, then?
A figure close to Leeds told the original source that Marcelo Bielsa’s side are keeping close tabs on the 22-year-old ahead of a possible summer transfer window move, alongside fellow Reds youngster Ryan Kent.
Wilson has spent the season on loan with Frank Lampard’s Derby County, impressing in their push alongside the Yorkshire club for promotion to the Premier League, meaning United have got to see the striker first-hand in 2018/2019.
He is a product of the famous academy of Liverpool, first hooking up with the team in childhood and remaining with them ever since through multiple loans.
Making nine caps thus far, the man who is also comfortable out on the right wing is a full international with Ryan Giggs’ Wales.
Liverpool, this would come back to bite you
Although the starlet still has four years left on his current contract, you feel that because of his age Jurgen Klopp could let this deal go through and allow Wilson to leave Anfield for Elland Road in the summer – there isn’t much room for another attacking player in Liverpool’s starting XI right now.
However, the Reds can’t afford to let this transfer happen as it would undoubtedly come back to bite them one day.
The Whites sit third in England’s second tier at the time of writing but are level on points with second-placed Sheffield United with just three fixtures remaining. Promotion very much looks possible, which would mean Premier League football next term and two fixtures against Liverpool for Wilson to haunt his former club in.
Then there’s the long-term implications. Wilson looks like a real talent who will surely reach the top level of the game, or at least somewhere very close, at some point during his career. Letting him leave for Leeds creates the possibility of him one day representing one of Liverpool’s key divisional rivals instead.
