Half-centuries from Caleb Jewell, Matthew Renshaw and Jake Doran – the latter two unbeaten – helped Australia Under-19s chase down their target with almost ten overs to spare and take a 1-0 lead in the five-match series. England Under-19s were bowled out for 206, Arjun Nair and Fletcher Seymour taking four wickets piece, and did not come close to defending their total.Although England’s bowlers were economical enough to begin with, they needed wickets, something the Australia openers denied them during a stand of 107 in 26.2 overs. Jewell was the more aggressive partner, reaching his half-century off 64 balls, before becoming the first of two wickets in two balls for Hampshire offspinner Brad Taylor.Taylor had Jewell lbw for 69 and then bowled Jordan Gauci for a golden duck but those consecutive moments of success were all England could manage in the field, as Renshaw continued in the anchor role while Doran struck seven boundaries to help finish things off.Having chosen to bat, captain Aneurin Donald would have been disappointed to see his side dismissed with 29 balls unbowled. England came out of the blocks quickly but lost wickets with equal haste, slipping to 73 for 3 in the 13th over. That became 91 for 5, with Donald the third batsman to fall in the 20s, as offspinner Nair struck three times.Callum Taylor top-scored with 35 and Brad Taylor made 33 not out but Tasmania seamer Seymour returned to finish off the innings and give wicketkeeper Tom Healy – son of Ian – two catches to go with a couple of stumpings.
