England vs. France on November 17th at Wembley is unlikely to go down as a fixture many truly remember. The game was played out in the wake of the horrific acts of terrorism in the Paris in the run up to the weekend, and the fact that Lassana Diarra was performing just days after losing his cousin in the attacks puts football into perspective.
Alas, there was one notable talking point from the actual game… the continued rise of Dele Alli. The 19-year-old only moved from MK Dons after a period in League One to Spurs over the summer, but he’s ready a first-team regular at White Hart Lane and now he’s fully-fledged goalscoring international midfielder. His long-range effort may have taken a slight deflection as it evaded club team-mate Hugo Lloris in the French goal, but the way he strode forward and smashed the ball at goal was encouraging to say the least. As well as that terrific drive, Alli was his usual combative self in the middle of the pitch, with his winning of the ball getting the move for Wayne Rooney’s volleyed second goal going.
We English supporters have a tendency to get carried away, and Twitter has shown that Dele Alli has been given the ‘treatment’. Better than Zinedine Zidane? On his way to Chelsea? Here are some of the best reactions…
